Nova Scotia is located in the New England area of eastern North
America, and borders New Brunswick (west). First known as Acadia
by the French, settlement began in the early 17th century by French
colonists. For many years the colony was repeatedly transferred
between France and Britain. Not until the early 18th century was
the colony firmly in Britain's control. Thousands of Acadians who
resisted British rule were expelled to Louisiana territory and replaced
by New Englanders. Today the ice-free port of Halifax contains the
country's largest naval and coast guard bases. The water in Northumberland
Strait is the warmest for ocean swimming in the province. The Bay
of Fundy has the world's highest tides, and is one of Nova Scotia's
main tourist attractions.
