North American Political Parties:
Bloc Quebecois
(Canada) - Localized to the Province of Quebec, the Bloc's single
mandate is to achieve the separation of Quebec from Canada. Although
the party has served as the official opposition of Canada, it is
a technical impossibility for the party to form a government, alone.
Thus, they serve as an advocate of Quebec's interests, and as an
opposition to Canada itself.
Conservative
Party (Canada) - Originally established before the founding
of Canada itself, the Conservative Party has reemerged as one of
the two major parties in Canada after the merger of the Canadian
Alliance and Progressive Conservative parties in 2003. They run
on a platform of: lower taxation, paying down the debt, increased
military spending and decreased government waste and corruption.
Democratic Party
(US) - The oldest political party in the US, dating back to the
beginning of the nation itself. Considered to be the political party
in favor of a strong and far-reaching federal government, including
extensive education programs, health care initiatives, and social
reform measures.
Green Party
(US & Canada) - Strong supporters of environmental conservation,
most "Greens" hold the belief that every issue must be
seen from an ecological or environmental perspective. They also
promote direct democracy, a socialist-like redistribution of wealth,
nonviolence and non-intervention in foreign affairs, and the promotion
of the poor and working classes.
Liberal
Party (Canada) - Being the most successful party in Canada's
history, they tend to run on a campaign of the status-quo. Liberals
believe in a highly centralized federal government, with a powerful
Prime Minister and promote issues such as: safeguarding universal
health care, protecting minority rights, fostering multiculturalism,
and preserving Canadian culture from external influences.
Libertarian Party
(US & Canada) - Established on the belief that people should
have the freedom to conduct their lives however they wish, providing
that they do not intrude or violate the rights of others. They embrace
a free-market economy, are dedicated to preserving personal freedoms,
strongly oppose a large and powerful government, and are in favor
of large tax cuts.
New
Democratic Party (Canada) - A political alternative in Canada
that characterizes itself as a socialist democratic party. They
favor a large federal government, which promotes cultural diversity,
environmental responsibility, extensive social reform measures,
and international human rights. They also oppose globalization and
tax breaks for large banks and corporations.
Reform Party
(US) - Founded by Texas industrialist Ross Perot. The Reform Party
demands ethical conduct on the part of elected officials and is
dedicated to simplifying the tax system, balancing the federal budget,
setting term limits, reforming campaign finance, and reforming social
programs.
Republican Party
(US) - Founded as the US nationwide anti-slavery party, the Republican
Party has evolved into a party based on the belief that it is not
the government, but the individual citizen, through business and
financial interests, who should guide society.
